Vale Prof Ray Baughman, COE-CSI International Scientific Advisory Committee member, Centre Associate Investigator

Professor Ray Baughman, our Centre’s International Scientific Advisory Committee member and Centre Associate Investigator passed away this month (18 April 2025).

Prof Baughman was a prolific inventor and scientist. His most-recent research focused on developing new technologies for harvesting and storing waste energy, new types of artificial muscles, the fabrication, characterisation and application of carbon nanotube sheets and yarns, sensors, and new material synthesis.

He was the Robert A. Welch Distinguished Chair in Chemistry in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and director of the Alan G. MacDiarmid NanoTech Institute at UT Dallas.

COE-CSI members are profoundly grateful for Prof Ray Baughman’s contribution to our Centre. Particularly, our Centre Director Scientia Professor Liming Dai had a long-term collaboration with Professor Ray Baughman. His wisdom, generosity, and unwavering encouragement have shaped so much of the scientific life for many of us and our Centre. Ray had an incredible way of making everyone feel seen, valued, and uplifted. He was a person full of genuine care and warmth. We will miss him deeply, especially his plenary speech during ICACSI 2024 conference and his visit to our Centre in November 2024.

More detail about Prof Baughman’s achievements can be found in his UDT biography.
