Dr Bingqiao Xie

Dr Bingqiao Xie is a Research Fellow in the Particles and Catalysis (PartCat) Research Group at UNSW Sydney. He recently completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland (2023–2026), where he worked at the interface of catalysis, materials engineering, and sustainable energy conversion. At EPFL, he led research projects focused on solar-driven chemical synthesis, catalyst design, and mechanistic studies of catalytic processes, while also contributing to the supervision and mentoring of undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral researchers.

Dr Xie completed his PhD at UNSW in 2021 under the supervision of Centre Acting Director Scientia Professor Rose Amal and subsequently continued in the PartCat group as a postdoctoral researcher. His research focuses on the development of advanced catalytic materials and the fundamental understanding of heterogeneous catalytic processes for sustainable chemical and energy technologies. His work spans photocatalysis, photothermal catalysis, thermal catalysis, and integrated solar-driven chemical conversion systems, with particular interests in CO2 capture and utilisation, small-molecule activation, and renewable fuel synthesis.

A central theme of his research is understanding how energy, charge carriers, and reaction intermediates can be controlled at catalytic interfaces to drive selective chemical transformations. To achieve this, he combines catalyst engineering with advanced operando and in situ characterisation techniques to establish structure-activity relationships and uncover reaction mechanisms under working conditions. His research has resulted in publications in leading journals including Nature Catalysis, Nature Communications, JACS, Joule and ACS Catalysis.

Dr Xie serves on the Early Career Editorial Board of the Chemical Engineering Journal and maintains active collaborations with researchers and industry partners across Australia, Europe, Asia, and UK. He welcomes applications from highly motivated students interested in catalysis, renewable energy, carbon utilisation, advanced materials, reaction engineering, and emerging approaches that combine experimental and data-driven catalyst discovery.
