Dr Maneesha Ginige is a recognised leader in environmental biotechnology at CSIRO, with a research focus on the integration of microbiology, chemical engineering, and advanced sensor technologies to deliver innovative and sustainable solutions for waste treatment, environmental monitoring, and resource recovery.
His multidisciplinary research addresses critical challenges in environmental sustainability and circular economy development, spanning:
- Design of resilient and efficient water and wastewater treatment systems, leveraging microbial process engineering and real-time monitoring technologies;
- Recovery of energy, nutrients, and carbon from municipal and industrial waste streams through smart use of biologically processes, supporting circular economy models;
- Carbon dioxide sequestration into high-value biopigments, biofuels, and nutrient-rich feedstocks for human and animal use;
- Recovery of nutrients as organic and inorganic polymers, with commercial applications in bioremediation, agriculture, and sustainable material development;
- Deployment of bioelectrochemical and sensor-integrated platforms, combined with smart membrane filtration technologies, for real-time, accurate monitoring and surveillance of environmental pollutants;
- Development of bio-inspired battery systems for efficient energy storage and release, aligned with emerging energy transition needs.
Dr Ginige’s research contributes to environmentally and economically valuable innovations, advancing circular bioeconomy pathways and supporting the development of more sustainable infrastructure and industrial systems.
