A new graphene-based ceramic membrane technology opens pathways for industry collaboration

Centre Researchers led by Chief Investigator Associate Professor Rakesh Joshi from UNSW have filed a provisional patent for a new graphene-based ceramic membrane technology with potential applications in next-generation filtration and separation.

This public description focuses on the technology platform and its potential applications while protecting the inventive details covered by the patent filing. The research team welcomes opportunities to work with companies on application-specific testing, scale-up, system integration and commercialisation.

“Our focus is on translating the exceptional separation properties of graphene-based materials into practical membrane systems that can be evaluated under real operating conditions. Ceramic supports provide a strong platform for developing robust technologies with clear industry relevance.” said Associate Professor Joshi.

 

Researchers behind the development

Led by Centre Chief Investigator Associate Professor Rakesh Joshi, the research team including Centre Research Fellow Dr Xiaojun Ren,  Dr Tongxi Lin, and Centre PhD student Mr Adhy Wibowo carried out the experimental development, including membrane fabrication, characterisation and testing. Their work has been central to developing and evaluating this new ceramic-supported graphene membrane platform, as part of our broader research in two-dimensional materials, membrane transport and advanced separation technologies.

Building on our industry translation experience

The new patent builds on the team’s long-standing industry-facing research in graphene membranes and environmental technologies. Previous collaborations with industry have spanned graphene-based membranes, water and wastewater purification, sensing, atmospheric water technologies, gas separation and other graphene-enabled applications.

This translational pathway has already contributed to previous intellectual property in graphene-based filtration and provides a strong foundation for taking the new ceramic membrane concept toward practical deployment.
