Spotlight: Dr Xintong Gao
Meet ARC COE-CSI Research Postdoctoral Fellow Dr Xintong Gao
Dr Xintong Gao, a COE-CSI Postdoctoral Researcher in the School of Chemical Engineering at Adelaide University, working under the supervision of COE-CSI Deputy Director Professor Shizhang Qiao and Chief Investigator Professor Yao Zheng. Xintong joined the Centre during her PhD at the University of Adelaide and has since continued her research as a postdoctoral researcher. Her research brings together sustainable electrocatalysis, waste valorisation and chemical manufacturing.
What is your research about?
My research focuses on sustainable electrocatalysis and the synthesis of value-added chemicals. In particular, I develop advanced electrocatalytic materials and reaction systems powered by renewable electricity to sustainably convert waste carbon and nitrogen resources, including waste urea/urine, waste plastics, and biomass-derived feedstocks, into value-added chemicals and green fuels.
Through electrocatalysis, I hope to enable chemical transformations under milder and energy-efficient conditions, particularly for processes that conventionally rely on high temperatures, high pressures, or complex processing. Ultimately, my research aims to create new connections between waste resource valorisation and sustainable chemical manufacturing.
How does being part of CSI support your research?
Being part of CSI has provided me with a highly interdisciplinary, and collaborative research environment. It has given me opportunities to interact with researchers from diverse backgrounds and to access expertise, research approaches, and advanced characterisation techniques across different fields.
What do you love about your role with COE-CSI?
I really enjoy the open, collaborative, and multidisciplinary research culture within COE-CSI. Researchers across the Centre bring diverse expertise and perspectives, while sharing a common interest in addressing important challenges in renewable energy, catalysis, green chemistry, and sustainable chemical manufacturing.
This environment gives me the opportunity to engage with ideas beyond my own research area, and I often gain new inspiration through discussions with colleagues. I believe that many interesting research questions and innovative ideas emerge when different disciplines and ways of thinking come together, and this is one of the aspects I value most about being part of COE-CSI.
What do you love about your role with COE-CSI?
For me, one of the biggest motivations is curiosity and the excitement of exploring the unknown. One of the things I enjoy most about research is that you never quite know what an experiment might reveal. It may confirm your original hypothesis, or it may produce something completely unexpected, and those unexpected results can often open up entirely new questions and directions. In that sense, every day has the potential to bring a new discovery.
And, of course, a good cup of coffee helps! Since coming to Australia, I have also grown to really enjoy the local coffee and brunch culture. Outside the lab, finding a nice café for a coffee and brunch on the weekend is a simple but wonderful way for me to recharge.
